Jos Tholhuijsen appointed new Chair and executive body of Advanced Biofuels Coalition
Commenting on the new role, Tholhuijsen stressed: "I am honoured and grateful for the opportunity to take on this role within the Advanced Biofuels Coalition. The coalition has been doing great work to accelerate the development and adoption of advanced biofuels."
"The EU’s adoption of the ‘Fit for 55’ climate and energy package is a very good step in the right direction which includes a clear role for advanced biofuels to play.” - added Jos.
Tholhuijsen, who has a solid experience in navigating complex legislation and decision-making processes at EU level, succeeds Sophia Haywood, who has led the Coalition with dedication and vision over the last year. Haywood, commented:
“It has been an honour to represent the coalition as Chair and sit on the organization’s executive committee since 2023. Together we have grown awareness of advanced biofuels, rebranded the organisation and launched our manifesto for the next political mandate. I am delighted to pass the baton as Chair into very capable hands with Jos, as we face an urgent need to scale and support indigenous advanced biofuels production in Europe.”
The Coalition’s new executive committee will be completed by Mathias Held (UPM), Sanna Jokila (St1) and Ian Denis (Enerkem).

About the Advanced Biofuels Coalition
Advanced biofuels – as defined under Annex IX Part A of the EU Renewable Energy Directive 2018/2001/EC – are derived from non-food competing agricultural or forestry residues and waste streams. These innovative technologies bring multiple benefits in terms of CO2 reduction, increased energy security, additional revenues for farmers and forestry, improved waste management practices, and job creation.
The Advanced Biofuels Coalition is committed to progressing the expansion of advanced biofuel production and uptake across hard-to-abate sectors in Europe. The coalition represents organisations across the whole advanced biofuels value chain, from companies carrying out commercial production today, the enabling supply chain and those investing in the future production pipeline.
